Was interning at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre till last week. Although I couldn’t see the launch, I did get to see the vehicle being assembled in the VAB. It was a surreal experience-knowing that I was looking up the nozzles of the vehicle that would soon carry the most sophisticated synthetic aperture radar to orbit…🙃

This project is initiated by NASA. NASA could have done this project alone but they’re collaborating with ISRO to take advantage of ISRO’s cost effective engineering, efficient satellite manufacturing, and launch expertise (ISRO has proven itself by launching Chandrayaan, Mangalyan etc).

ISRO’s share of the project cost is about USD 91 million vs NASA’s share of the project cost is whopping USD 1.1 billion.

There’s a reason It’s called NISAR and not INSAR

Also if the project was as revolutionary as you are thinking NASA would’ve done it alone to take all the credit. It’s just a side hustle for NASA but It’s a very big project for ISRO.

Really cool stuff but I'll just point out that spy satellites tend to have far, far larger dishes than that. For example the Orion class satellites which have dishes upwards of 100 meters in diameter.

I have been trying to follow NISAR, I was surprised it made orbit without catching it. The launch video is hard for english speakers but CC is great. ISRO really performed here. I might go ask what//r/geology thinks about its science. US science is on its deathbed.
